What to do if you are having trouble breastfeeding

Feed your baby

This might sound super basic, but it’s also super important. Babies require increasing volumes of milk over the first 2 weeks of life. If you are unable to feed your baby at the breast, you can express your own breastmilk, consider donor milk from another breastfeeding mum or formula

Look after your milk supply

Where you are unable to do this by baby feeding at the breast for whatever reason, a breast pump is the next best option. You might be able to use one in hospital, hire or purchase one. Not all breast pumps are made equal. If you are able to use a hospital grade breast pump like a Medela Symphony or Spectra S1/S2 then this can help to keep your body making milk.

Pump at least 10x per day from both breasts, for around 20 minutes at a time.

Cuddle and contact

Practice skin to skin with your baby as much as you can. Keep your chest a happy place for baby to be.

Contact a lactation consultant for help.
